ON BEHALF OF MR. SHYAM HARYANI:
Hi everybody,
If you haven’t already heard, my daughter Neelam has decided to take the Live Below the Line challenge this week.
She’s pledged to live on just $2 a day for 5 days, from May 16th to 20th.
At first it seems an impossibly small amount, but then you realise that actually a truly ridiculous number of people live on that amount every day.
$2 is the Australian equivalent of the international extreme poverty line – and through this challenge she’s hoping to raise awareness about the issue, but also money to make a difference. You might think that the $2 would go further and buy more in developing countries (that’s what I thought too!) – but actually the $2 is worked out to be the Australian equivalent of what life is like for over a billion people. Extreme poverty means $2 per day buying Australian things, with Australian dollars. It’s pretty incredible to think about.
It’s definitely proving hard for her – there’s no coffee, no suger, no flavour, and not much nutrition. But if through this she can get a bit of a better insight into what life is like for those trapped in poverty – and raise money to make a difference for them – then it’s time well spent.
So I’m asking you to please donate generously:
You can donate at

Dear Mr Haryani,
Your daughter has shown a brave front in actually Enacting to live below the line…I wish her all the best in this Noble Cause of hers…
Youngsters should be encouraged to be a part fo such campaigns to help the international community —
I had been invloved in such causes myself from my school years whilst in Mumbai and with TRIVANI FOUNDATION whilst my stay in Melbourne …
Unfortunately, I had to come back to Mumbai for various circumstances….and quit Trivani as well…
According to 2011 statistics, there are about 925 Million Hungry People in the world — who barely survive in life until the age of 10.
The causes of poverty include poor people’s lack of resources, an extremely unequal income distribution in the world and within specific countries, conflict, and hunger itself. As of 2008 (2005 statistics), the World Bank has estimated that there were an estimated 1,345 million poor people in developing countries who live on $1.25 a day or less.3 This compares to the later FAO estimate of 1.02 billion undernourished people. Extreme poverty remains an alarming problem in the world’s developing regions, despite some progress that reduced “dollar–now $1.25– a day” poverty from (an estimated) 1900 million people in 1981, a reduction of 29 percent over the period. Progress in poverty reduction has been concentrated in Asia, and especially, East Asia, with the major improvement occurring in China. In Sub-Saharan Africa, the number of people in extreme poverty has increased. The statement that ‘poverty is the principal cause of hunger’ is, though correct, unsatisfying.
All the Best — is all that I can say at the moment..!!
